Think of a dark room full of lights. Where people mess around with machines and set everything in motion. Where unknown beings make contact and break new ground. Where experiment and ecstasy meet, like the hare meets the hedgehog. For a celebration of the moment and infinity.

With “Cosmic Tuesday” the underground club rhiz meets the contemporary Teleport Collective. In 2023 they started organizing concert nights with a unique program on selected Tuesdays. The starting point is always the spheres of electronic lofi jazz, the atmosphere of nostalgic film music and the cosmos of sweaty club beats. However, the course of the evening depends on the invited feature artist, the respective impulse topic and the audience. In any case, the focus is on the search for the expression of a collective present. The aim is to create an inspiring space that promotes artistic dialogue and networking. On the other hand, it’s also simply about making the previously quietest weekday resonate and and letting it fade out together.

Thank you for attending
our first two seasons!

COSMIC TUESDAY #6

★★★ 19.12.2023 ★★★ Feature Guest: Emilie “Millycent“ Groz ★★★ Impulse Topic: Electrometeors

Electrometeors are atmospheric phenomena that represent luminous phenomena in the sky or in the atmosphere, including lightning storms and auroras. The name is derived from "electro", which refers to electrical charges, and "meteor", which refers to luminous phenomena. These phenomena, visible or audible, are associated with electrical charges. Saint Elmo's fires, transient lighting events and other examples are the consequences of atmospheric electricity that are studied in meteorology.

The versatile artist Emilie Groz aka Millycent is probably also a luminous phenomenon in the figurative sense. Together with Teleport Collective, a freely improvised rainbow was spanned on this evening, from cosmic fusion jazz to primeval-sounding language art and electrifying live techno with mumble rap topping. Definitely the most humorous of all Cosmic Tuesdays!

COSMIC TUESDAY #5

★★★ 24.11.2023 ★★★ Feature Guest: Rui Aziz ★★★ Impulse Topic: The Golden Ratio

The golden ratio (ratio of 1:1.618) is a fascinating concept that has captivated mathematicians for thousands of years. This harmonious proportion is not only found in abstract calculations, but also in the world around us. From the dimensions of the human body to the patterns in nature, such as the leaves of plants or the spiral arms of the Milky Way, the golden ratio reveals a deep aesthetic order. Interpreted as a rectangle, even the outline of the Josefstadt district corresponds to this famous proportion. In art, the golden ratio was regarded as the epitome of natural perfection and served as a tool for artists (including composers) to create aesthetically pleasing works.

In a free improvisation with Rohollah "Rui" Aziz, different musical relations came together. His instrument, the kamancha, is traditionally native to the regions of Turkey, Iran and Azerbaijan and is typically used to play specific scales that express different atmospheres. Teleport Collective followed this harmonic-melodic narrative into a winding communication between tradition and the present, heading towards the center of this spiral of merging sound worlds.

COSMIC TUESDAY #4

★★★ 28.10.2023 ★★★ Feature Guest: Vicy Pfeil ★★★ Impulse Topic: Space and Wealth

The tension between space travel and wealth manifests itself in a dynamic that generates enthusiasm and controversy in equal measure. The involvement of billionaires such as Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos in space companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin not only highlights technological breakthroughs and expanded access to space, but also raises critical questions. Among other things, it is about dominance in the satellite sector and a potential colonization of space! Critics see this as a shift in the unequal balance of power on Earth into space.

Together with saxophonist Victoria Pfeil the topic was processed musically and served as a starting point for various exaggerations and escalations. Between rich and escapist improvisations, a miniature astronaut caused quite a stir: He slowly floated out of his home planet towards the audience until he finally fell to the ground unplanned at the end of the concert. Maybe a symbol for the overestimation of mankind and a dark prognosis for its fate?

COSMIC TUESDAY #3

★★★ 16.05.2023 ★★★ Feature Guest: Gabriel Moraes ★★★ Impulse Topic: Microcosmos Josefstadt

The Josefstadt is named after Emperor Joseph I and is known for its numerous historical buildings and theaters. It is one of the oldest and best-preserved districts in the city, considered one of Vienna's most elegant and exclusive neighborhoods. On the other hand, it is also home to the underground club Rhiz, as well as many other places for subculture. The questions arises: What grows in between? What reveals itself amidst the cobblestones when you focus the magnifying glass on them?

On this heavily rainy Cosmic Tuesday, together with guitarist Gabriel Moraes and the audience at Rhiz, such a microcosm emerged. The intimate space was filled with driving and energetic improvisations, urban-inspired soundscapes, and local poetry flowing through it. Among the sounds, one could hear an effected voice recording of the poem "Ich bin ein Kind der Stadt" (I am a Child of the City) by Anton Wildgans.

COSMIC TUESDAY #2

★★★ 21.03.23 ★★★ Feature Guest: Flora Geißelbrecht ★★★ Impulse Topic: Voyager Golden Record

The Voyager Golden Records were taken aboard the Voyager spacecraft in 1977 to introduce Earth and human culture to possible extraterrestrial beings. Although they were intended as messages of peace and to showcase the diversity of Earth, they were also criticized for the selection of music and cultures represented on them. Additionally, among the greetings recorded on the records, there is one from Kurt Waldheim, the former Secretary-General of the United Nations, who is now known for his long-concealed Nazi past and connections to war crimes. As an artistic investigation of this theme, this Cosmic Tuesday was dedicated to the task of symbolically updating the earthly greetings from the past.

Together with violist/vocalist Flora Geißelbrecht and voices from the audience, an improvised reinterpretation of the greeting messages to distant worlds was created—a musically intimate snapshot sent directly from Rhiz.

COSMIC TUESDAY #1

★★★ 17.01.23 ★★★ Feature Guest: Mona Matbou Riahi ★★★ Impulse Topic: Space Debris

Space debris refers to defective satellites, rocket stages, and garbage that orbits around the Earth, posing an increasing threat to human space activities. Serving as a strikingly exaggerated symbol of our planet's pollution caused by humans, this impulse theme offered numerous points of connection for artistically-musical approaches, such as sonification of NASA research data, the use of trash as sound sources, and the lyrical-emotional processing of this literally "ungraspable" topic.

Together with clarinetist and improvisational artist Mona Matbou Riahi, an energetic picture of harmony and disruption, creation and destruction was drawn during this first Cosmic Tuesday – with unexpectedly high attendance at the event.
